October 25th, 2003RV roof damage and repair
This is a description of the process sent to Eternabond's Canadian distributor.
------------------------
This is my son on top of the roof after we took the 3 layers of tape off that we had applied to protect it from water damage during our vacation.
The piece of EPDM in the patchit kit that I had ordered was not large enough. It was supposed to be 12 x 12 but was only 9 x 11. We used a cheaper Plas-T-Cote two sided type tape (not in the same league as Eternabond) underneath the membrane to hold it down and then caulked it as shown below as an added safeguard. Then, we decided to use the entire piece of aluminum that I got at the trailer dealer that ordered the caulk and other items for me. We put the Double Stick Eternabond tape on the bottom side (about a 1/4 inch in from the edge) all around making sure that there were no openings for air or water to get through. We left the protective clear tape on while we got on to the roof (my son) and the ladder (me). We were very cautious since we knew that once it was put on we would have to live with it. We then caulked it once and the next day I put another layer of caulk on. This is what it looks like now. I've got to clean the edges of the roof so the white will be the same as the aluminum. (note - I did clean it and it did look good but it gets dirty pretty quickly). Frankly, for about $100 I think it looks pretty good versus thousands of dollars to have the membrane replaced. I'm going to try to get a Triple E decal to put on the aluminum cap.
